쓰는 것과 다르게 소리 나요
받침 하나쯤은 이제 익숙하죠? 여기서는 글자가 이어질 때 소리가 어떻게 부드럽게 바뀌는지 봐요. 규칙은 7개지만, 사실 원리는 하나예요 — 발음하기 더 편한 쪽으로 소리가 움직인다는 것. You already know batchim. Here's what happens when syllables run together — Korean sound shifts toward whatever's easier to say. Seven rules, one underlying idea.
🌊
다 외우려고 하지 마세요. 예문을 소리 내어 여러 번 읽다 보면, 규칙을 몰라도 입이 먼저 편한 쪽으로 움직이게 될 거예요.
Don't try to memorize these — read the examples aloud a few times and your mouth will start finding the easier sound on its own.
7가지 발음 규칙
THE 7 RULES1
받침 발음Final Consonant Sound
음절이 받침으로 끝날 때 · when a syllable ends in a batchim
받침 자리에서 나는 소리는 딱 7가지뿐이에요. 그래서 서로 다른 글자인데 똑같이 들리는 경우가 많아요. (자세한 내용은 받침 페이지 참고!)
Only 7 sounds can occupy the final-consonant spot, so different letters often end up sounding identical. See the Batchim page for the full breakdown.

연음Linking
받침 뒤에 ㅇ으로 시작하는 글자(모음)가 올 때 · when a syllable starting with ㅇ follows a batchim
다음 글자가 ㅇ으로 시작하면, 앞 받침이 그대로 넘어가서 그 글자의 첫소리가 돼요. ㅇ은 원래 소리가 없으니, 받침이 대신 그 자리를 채우는 거예요.
When the next syllable's initial slot is ㅇ (silent), the batchim slides over and becomes that syllable's actual initial sound — since ㅇ has no sound of its own, the batchim fills the empty seat.

💡 포인트 — "밥" 혼자면 받침 ㅂ이 그대로 [밥]으로 나지만, 뒤에 "이"가 붙으면 ㅂ이 넘어가서 [바비]가 돼요. 뒷글자가 ㅇ으로 시작하는 게 핵심이에요.
"밥" alone is [bap], but adding "이" pulls the ㅂ forward into [ba-bi]. The trigger is always a following syllable that starts with ㅇ.
⚠️ 헷갈리기 쉬운 점 — "낮"은 혼자 있을 땐 받침이 [낟]으로 닫힌 소리가 나지만(받침 페이지 참고), 뒤에 "이"가 붙으면 [나디]가 아니라 [나지]가 돼요. 연음은 그 받침이 원래 무슨 글자였는지를 그대로 옮기는 거지, 닫힌 소리(대표음)를 옮기는 게 아니거든요. Tricky part — on its own, 낮 closes to [낟] (see the Batchim page), but adding "이" gives [na-ji], not [na-di]. Linking carries over the batchim's original letter, not its collapsed "closed" sound.
🚫 단, ㅇ받침은 안 넘어가요 — 한국어[한구거]처럼 다른 받침은 뒤 모음으로 넘어가지만, ㅇ받침(콧소리 ng)만은 예외예요. 그래서 영어는 아무리 뒤에 모음이 와도 그대로 [영어]예요. One exception — an ㅇ batchim (the nasal "ng" sound) never slides over, even before a vowel. So while 한국어 links to [han-gu-geo], 영어 stays exactly [yeong-eo] — nothing moves.

된소리되기Tensing
받침 뒤에 ㄱ·ㄷ·ㅂ·ㅅ·ㅈ이 올 때 · when ㄱㄷㅂㅅㅈ follow a batchim
받침 뒤에 오는 소리가 된소리(쌍자음)로 세게 바뀌어요. ㄱ→ㄲ, ㄷ→ㄸ, ㅂ→ㅃ, ㅅ→ㅆ, ㅈ→ㅉ.
The consonant right after a batchim gets tensed into its "doubled" version: ㄱ→ㄲ, ㄷ→ㄸ, ㅂ→ㅃ, ㅅ→ㅆ, ㅈ→ㅉ.

💡 ㄹ받침 뒤에서도 똑같이 세져요 — 할당[할땅], 일자리[일짜리], 물가[물까], 술병[술뼝]처럼, 한자어에서는 ㄹ받침 뒤에 오는 ㄱㄷㅂㅅㅈ도 그대로 된소리가 돼요.
The same tensing happens after an ㄹ batchim, too — in Sino-Korean words like 할당 [hal-ttang] or 물가 [mul-kka].
⚠️ 그런데 예외가 있어요 — 알바, 웰빙, 얼굴처럼 고유어나 외래어는 똑같은 글자 조합이어도 된소리로 안 바뀌어요. 이 규칙은 한자어 합성어일 때만 적용돼요. But there's an exception — native Korean words and loanwords like 알바, 웰빙, 얼굴 stay untensed even with the same letter pattern. This rule really only kicks in for Sino-Korean compounds.

비음화Nasalization
받침이 ㄱ·ㄷ·ㅂ 계열 소리일 때 ㄴ·ㅁ이 오면 · when ㄴ or ㅁ follows a ㄱㄷㅂ-type batchim
Right before ㄴ or ㅁ, the batchim shifts to its nasal partner: ㄱ→ㅇ, ㄷ→ㄴ, ㅂ→ㅁ. ㅋ and ㄲ behave just like ㄱ, ㅍ behaves like ㅂ — and any letter that closes to [ㄷ] as a batchim (ㅅㅈㅊㅌㅎ, etc.) shifts to [ㄴ] the same way.

💡 한 단계 더 — ㄱ+ㄹ은 2단계로 바뀌어요 — 백리[뱅니], 식량[싱냥], 복리[봉니]처럼, ㄱ받침 뒤에 ㄹ이 오면 먼저 그 ㄹ이 [ㄴ]으로 바뀌고, 그다음 ㄴ 앞에서 ㄱ이 다시 [ㅇ]으로 바뀌어요.
A two-step shift — when ㄹ follows a ㄱ batchim (백리, 식량, 복리), the ㄹ first turns into [ㄴ], and then that [ㄴ] pulls the ㄱ into [ㅇ], the same way it would with any other ㄴ.

유음화Liquidization
ㄴ과 ㄹ이 나란히 만날 때 · when ㄴ and ㄹ end up next to each other
순서에 상관없이 ㄴ+ㄹ이든 ㄹ+ㄴ이든 둘 다 ㄹㄹ로 소리 나요. ㄹ의 혀 모양이 더 강해서, ㄴ이 ㄹ에 맞춰지는 거예요.
Whether it's ㄴ+ㄹ or ㄹ+ㄴ, both become ㄹㄹ — the tongue shape for ㄹ wins out, and ㄴ conforms to it.

ㅎ 변화The ㅎ Rule
받침 ㄱ·ㄷ·ㅂ·ㅈ이 ㅎ과 앞뒤 어느 쪽으로 만나도 · whether a ㄱㄷㅂㅈ sound meets ㅎ before or after it
ㅎ은 순서에 상관없이 ㄱㄷㅂㅈ을 더 세게(거센소리) 만들어요. 받침이 ㅎ 앞에 있어도(축하 → 추카), 받침 자체가 ㅎ이어서 뒤 글자를 세게 만들어도(넣다 → 너타) 결과는 똑같이 거센소리예요. ㄱ→ㅋ, ㄷ→ㅌ, ㅂ→ㅍ, ㅈ→ㅊ.
Whether the ㄱㄷㅂㅈ sound comes right before ㅎ (축하 → 추카) or the batchim IS ㅎ and pushes into the next consonant (넣다 → 너타), the result is the same aspirated sound: ㄱ→ㅋ, ㄷ→ㅌ, ㅂ→ㅍ, ㅈ→ㅊ.

구개음화Palatalization
ㄷ·ㅌ 뒤에 '이'가 올 때 · when ㄷ or ㅌ is followed by 이
ㄷ+이 → 지, ㅌ+이 → 치로 바뀌어요. '이' 발음을 더 편하게 이어 말하려는 변화예요. ㄷ 받침에 '히'가 붙을 때도(ㄷ+히) 결과는 같아요 — 먼저 ㅎ 때문에 ㄷ이 ㅌ으로 거세지고(6번 규칙), 그 ㅌ이 다시 '이' 앞에서 치로 바뀌는 2단계 변화예요.
ㄷ+이 becomes 지, and ㅌ+이 becomes 치 — the mouth shifts the sound to flow more smoothly into 이. When '히' follows a ㄷ batchim, the same ending shows up in two steps: ㅎ first aspirates ㄷ into ㅌ (rule #6), then that ㅌ palatalizes into 치 in front of 이.

더 알아두기
GOOD TO KNOWㅎ 탈락 · ㅎ can disappear
😄좋아해요→ /조아해요/
to like (something)
모음 사이에서 ㅎ이 약해지면서 거의 안 들려요.
Between two vowels, ㅎ weakens until it's barely audible.
겹받침 단순화 · double batchim simplifies
📖읽다→ /익따/
to read
겹받침 중 하나만 소리 나요. 자세한 내용은 받침 페이지에서!
Only one of the two batchim consonants survives — see the Batchim page.
ㄹ+ㄴ도 ㄹㄹ · reverse order too
📅일 년→ /일련/
one year
ㄹ 뒤에 오는 ㄴ도 똑같이 ㄹ로 바뀌어요 — 5번 규칙과 같은 원리예요.
A ㄴ right after ㄹ turns into ㄹ too — same rule as #5, just already in ㄹ→ㄴ order.
이+어=여 · vowels merge in speech
🔗붙이다 + 어요→ 붙여요
to attach → attaches (casual)
'이'로 끝나는 어간에 '어(요)'가 붙으면 두 모음이 하나로 줄어서 '여(요)'가 돼요. 7번 규칙의 '히'로 끝나는 어간(갇히다 → 갇혀요)도 똑같이 합쳐져요.
When a stem ending in 이 takes an 어(요) ending, the two vowels merge into 여(요). Stems ending in 히 from rule #7 (갇히다 → 갇혀요) contract the same way.
겹받침도 넘어가요 · double batchim links too
🪑앉아요→ /안자요/
to sit (present)
겹받침 뒤에 모음이 오면, 원래 묵음이던 뒤쪽 자음이 넘어가서 다음 글자의 초성이 돼요. 앉다 혼자면 [안따]지만, 앉아요는 [안자요]예요.
When a vowel follows a double batchim, the silent second consonant comes back and slides over as the next syllable's initial sound — 앉다 alone is [an-tta], but 앉아요 becomes [an-ja-yo].
연음은 계속 이어져요 · linking can chain
🇺🇸미국인이에요→ /미구기니에요/
(I) am American
연음은 한 번만 일어나는 게 아니에요. 받침 뒤에 모음이 이어지는 한 계속 넘어가요 — 미국인이에요는 세 번이나 연달아 이어져요.
Linking isn't a one-time thing — it keeps happening as long as a vowel follows a batchim. 미국인이에요 links three times in a row.
