STEP 7 · 패턴

동사 하나로 말투 네 가지

You already know the shape of a Korean sentence. Now let's dress up a verb a few different ways — "want to," "have to," "will," "can't" — using endings you'll hear constantly in real conversation.

🌱
겁먹지 않아도 돼요. 지금 이 페이지는 통째로 외우는 게 아니라, "아 이런 게 있구나" 정도로 훑어보는 용도예요. 동사 어간에 어미를 갈아 끼우는 감만 잡아도 충분해요. No need to memorize all of this today — just get a feel for how one ending swaps in for another on a verb stem.

동사에 어미 갈아 끼우기

Drop the -다 from a verb's dictionary form, and the stem is ready for any of these endings. Same four endings, any verb.

어미 · ENDING
자다 · to sleep
가다 · to go
-고 싶어요~하고 싶다 · want to
자고 싶어요
jago sipeoyo
I want to sleep.
가고 싶어요
gago sipeoyo
I want to go.
-아/어야 해요~해야 하다 · must
자야 해요
jaya haeyo
I must sleep.
가야 해요
gaya haeyo
I must go.
-ㄹ/을 거예요~할 것이다 · will
잘 거예요
jal geoyeyo
I will sleep.
갈 거예요
gal geoyeyo
I will go.
-ㄹ/을 수 없어요~할 수 없다 · can't
잘 수 없어요
jal su eopseoyo
I can't sleep.
갈 수 없어요
gal su eopseoyo
I can't go.
포인트 — 어미 4개를 외워두면, 새 동사를 배울 때마다 그대로 붙여서 바로 4가지 문장을 만들 수 있어요. 동사만 계속 갈아 끼우면 돼요.

The point — learn these four endings once, and every new verb you pick up instantly gives you four more sentences. Just swap the verb.

문장을 이어붙이는 연결어미

These endings link two ideas into one sentence — and/so, but, and if.

~아서 / ~어서 · and, so
배가 고파서 빵을 샀어요
I was hungry, so I bought bread.
~지만 · but
시간이 없지만 커피는 마셔요
I don't have time, but I still drink coffee.
~(으)면 · if
공부를 많이 하면 한국어를 잘하게 돼요
If you study a lot, you'll get good at Korean.

질문 만들기

Two easy ways to ask something: swap in a question word, or just let your voice rise at the end.

의문사로 · with a question word
어디에 가요?
Where are you going?
억양으로 · with rising intonation
가요? ⬆️
Are you going?
같은 "가요"라도 끝을 내리면 평서문("가요.", I go), 끝을 올리면 질문("가요?", Are you going?)이 돼요.

The exact same word "가요" becomes a statement with a falling tone and a question with a rising one.

QUIZ · 어미 맞히기

Match the ending to what it means.

1 / 5
잘 거예요 What does this sentence mean?
